This summer, the Omloop project in Utrecht’s Ondiep district will continue. Twelve new single-family homes will be added.

Ondiep is no ordinary urban neighborhood. Built at the beginning of the twentieth century as a small-scale, comprehensively designed residential area, the district still embodies the social housing ideal on which it was originally founded. Along the northern bend of the main road, LEVS is designing nearly 300 homes: 75% social rental, 25% mid-range. Densification is being pursued, but in a way that does justice to the human scale and the neighborhood’s fine-grained structure. Berlage’s urban plan remains intact; the new architecture seamlessly connects to it.

This summer, the project will get a sustainable continuation with 12 single-family homes, built by Vink Bouw. Behind their brick façades, these homes have walls and floors made of CLT - Cross Laminated Timber, modern timber construction that meets the highest sustainability ambitions. This choice allows the homes to fit seamlessly into the workers’ housing in the existing urban fabric, while the structure behind it offers a contemporary response to the challenges of our time. In this project, sustainability and cultural-historical character do not have to exclude one another.

Completion of the single-family homes is scheduled for Q1 2027.
