Strandeiland M³

Amsterdam's Strandeiland will be a multifaceted neighbourhood where living, working, learning and recreation are central. M³ will be a neighbourhood for families of all shapes and sizes, designed for social sustainability. The landscape plays a central role, with circularity and bio-based building. LEVS produced the design for Mix, Max, Match (M³) commissioned by AM Gebiedsontwikkeling together with a broad team including MEESVISSER, BETA and DELVA Landscape Architecture & Urbanism. The plan includes 344 homes, a spacious neighbourhood hub, commercial spaces and a health centre.

Strandeiland as a link to the city

The plan fulfils a linking function: as an announcement of the Muiden neighbourhood, as a connector of different islands and as an intersection of landscape structures. But it is also a special place socially. A young family neighbourhood under construction has a strong need for a programme that brings people together and allows the community to take root, grow and flourish. M3 exploits the best qualities of the site. Whether on a lively city street, or flowing into a lush park.

A neighbourhood with four spheres

M3 is one neighbourhood with four characters. A lively, active city neighbourhood in the Heart, with shops, restaurants and the hub. Next to it is Het Oog, where nature and city intertwine. A residential tower as a marker, unobstructed views over the water, and streets with margin strips connecting the public space and the buildings. The Strand is the place for nature lovers. Playful vistas to the park and a garden as a dune landscape to relax, walk and play in. The Makershaven gives the neighbourhood an edge: sturdy residential blocks, contemporary housing and attractive catering establishments.
