Commissioned by the consortium Van Adrighem Group, Leyten and Sonneborgh, LEVS is designing 130 homes on plot 10, within the District U area development in Vlaardingen. A mix of rental, owner-occupied and care homes, for elderly people with an intensive care need to lifetime-adaptable homes.
District U is a development by Van Adrighem Group and Leyten and will become the new city district on the former Unilever site, on the Nieuwe Maas. An area where living, working, learning, meeting and social functions will come together. The total development comprises approximately 800 homes and is part of the Rivierzone.
The design by LEVS will be a care block that connects home, building and neighborhood, built up from three layers that interact with each other: an urban layer with the bicycle storage and an active plinth, a collective layer with a multifunctional courtyard and a shared living room, and a residential layer with a roof garden for gardening.
Care is not given an isolated place here, but becomes part of the neighborhood from the outset. Residents of the nursing home get their own meeting space connected to the outdoor area; residents of the rental and owner-occupied homes share a second meeting space, connected to the central heart of the building. A children's center brings young and old closer together. In this way, a building is created that not only forms a community itself, but also becomes an active part of the neighborhood.
