The exhibition Cruquius: Experimentation and Playful Design tells the story of four pioneering buildings on the Cruquius Island, designed by LEVS architects. Cruquius Island is the last island in the Eastern Docklands being transformed into an urban residential area. During the economic crisis starting in 2008, the area evolved into an urban planning and architectural ‘test site’ where – without a predetermined urban plan – a new part of the city emerged. LEVS was given the opportunity to think in unconventional ways about urban living, working, and cohabitation.
The result is four remarkable residential buildings that highlight the importance of experimentation and design pleasure: De Bocht, De Loods, 2Peer, and Harbour Club.
In early 2024, LEVS will publish Cruquius: A Plea for Typological Experiment, a journey through the four buildings and the variety of housing forms they contain. The exhibition revisits and combines material from the publication to bring the designs to life. In addition to photos and drawings, the exhibition showcases films, soundscapes, and models of the buildings and residences.
