A new neighborhood is emerging in Utrecht: Merwede, a green, car-free urban development where people feel connected to all the life around them. Within the broader development of Merwede, LEVS, Paul de Ruiter Architects, and Zecc Architects are collaboratively designing an ensemble of three residential blocks. LEVS is specifically responsible for block 9, named Joy. A commission from AM and Synchroon.

"It is an honor and a challenge for us to create a design for this ambitious plan," says LEVS partner Adriaan Mout in this video.

Joy, located in the center of Merwede, is a representation of the city in itself. Surrounding the block are two squares and residential streets. Two passages lead to a serene nature garden in the middle of the block. With homes of various types and sizes, a community center, a youth lounge, and hospitality options, the block ensures urban variety, carefully brought together with materials that can age beautifully. The mix of wood, biobased insulation materials, and CO₂-low concrete ensures a low footprint.

The homes are now in pre-sale; the environmental permit is expected soon.
