Sukhodolskaya

Distinct sculptural ensemble

Sukhodolskaya, Yekaterinburg, Russia

Within the urban masterplan of Sukhodolskaya, the four sculptural apartment-buildings by LEVS form a distinct neighbourhood at the border of Yekaterinburg. The common practice of urban expansion in the Russian context often consists of repetitively cloning middle class housing blocks. Sudhodolskaya distinguishes itself from this tradition by being an architectural- and urban plan that produces affordable housing in a high quality living environment.

Optimal shaped volumes

The buildings surround a green park, and thereby create an intimate urban space in an otherwise undefined area. The different volumes of 300 apartments each and 5 to 15 stories have been arranged stepwise along the north-south axis of the site. They achieve both optimal sunlight exposure and an inspiring urban skyline. The buildings’ sharp outer features accentuate the ensemble’s scale.

Intimate public space

A variation of colour and height-profiles in the park-side facades gives the interior of the complex a more intimate character. The courtyard inside each complex is a peaceful place, where public and private gardens come together. Every individual complex stands connected to a park that transitions to the wider area.
