Orthogonal urban plans and repetitive residential plots may be easily realised, but are they liveable? Do they answer to the desires and lifestyle of urban professionals, families and youngsters, or recognise the cultural heritage of a varied population? We think not. That’s why in our design for the urban plan of Cité Modèle in Bamako we developed several alternative yet achievable scenarios. Working within tight regulations, Cité Modèle redefines the distribution of private and public space. We created surprisingly recognisable houses, streets, gardens and squares that defy the anonymous repetition dictated by standardized urban expansion. The result is three intimate urban neighbourhoods with space for play, gardening, socializing and community.
